Results elsewhere meant West Ham’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend saw them end the week in the relegation zone, one point behind 17th-placed Bournemouth.

West Ham qualified for Europe in each of the last two seasons but are now in a relegation battle that could see them go down to the Championship for the first time in over a decade.

Downes, a West Ham fan even before playing for the club, revealed that the Hammers’ current position has him and everyone around him at the club in despair.

The West Ham midfielder though has insisted the Hammers know what to do and will take the fight to everyone in their remaining matches in order to ensure their safety.

Speaking to West Ham’s official site, Downes said: “It’s killing me.

“It’s killing everyone.

“West Ham fan or not it’s killing everyone at the club.

“We’re not in a good spot.

“But we know what we have to do, we have to take the fight to everyone.”

West Ham’s next match sees them face Nottingham Forest and they will be hoping to get a victory against one of their potential relegation rivals this weekend.
