After sacking their second manager of the season in Nathan Jones, the expectation was for Southampton to appoint a new boss.
Selles was handed interim charge of the team but Southampton were looking for a permanent appointment, coming close to bringing in former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch but ultimately not being successful.
The Spaniard meanwhile led Southampton to a much-needed win over Chelsea last weekend that helped them keep only three points adrift of safety.
Southampton have now taken the decision to appoint Selles in a permanent capacity after the win against Chelsea, with the new manager claimed to be a popular figure.
For Fjortoft the appointment is an intriguing one as Southampton have taken the decision to not pursue the market for a manager and have decided to rely on Selles.
Taking to Twitter, Fjortoft wrote about Selles’ appointment: “Interesting Choice…”
For Selles, his responsibility will be to ensure Southampton stay in the Premier League beyond this season and it remains to be seen how well he does in his job.
