Rutter started Leeds’ 2-0 FA Cup defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage as Javi Gracia made a few changes to the starting eleven for the cup game.

The 20-year-old joined Leeds in the winter window and is still waiting for his first goal for the club after six appearances, but many were pleased with his performance at Fulham.

There is talk of the youngster potentially replacing Patrick Bamford up front for Leeds against Chelsea this weekend and Newsome conceded that it could happen.

However, the former Whites defender insisted that there are still aspects of his game that will need some big improvements moving forward.

But Newsome is a fan of the energy and commitment he brings to the table for Leeds despite not being anywhere close to the finished article.

Asked if Rutter could replace Bamford at the weekend, the former White said on BBC Radio Leeds: “Potentially.

“There are parts of his play that I feel he can improve on dramatically; his link-up play, his hold-up play.

“But I love his energy, I love his commitment.

“He never stops. He only played for 60 minutes as well.

“Is he the finished article?

“No, not by a long stretch and you know, six months ago I never thought we’d say the words that we’re really missing Rodrigo and his goals, because last season he did not do it for us, but it is there for everyone to see.”

Leeds paid a club record fee to sign Rutter and are confident that he will eventually come good at Elland Road.
