Evans has transformed Stevenage and has them chasing automatic promotion to League One with just a handful of games left to play.

One of those games came away at his former club Mansfield on Saturday, but Stevenage went down to a 1-0 defeat in an encounter low on quality.

Evans received an unpleasant reception from some Mansfield fans, having quit the club when manager and then taking charge of Peterborough United in 2018.

The Stevenage boss believes that the reception from the Mansfield fans was a backhanded compliment and insists his place as hugely successful statistically at the club is a fact.

“That’s the second time they’ve done it; they are entitled to do it the first time”, Evans said post match.

“You know what it is, it’s a just complete backhanded compliment that the best manager that has possibly ever been here since Ian Greaves is me – that’s a fact, that’s statistically a fact.

“No doubt they will do it next time and be allowed to come out with some behaviour which is absolutely disgraceful and has got no place.”

Evans will be looking for Stevenage to quickly return to winning ways and next on the agenda is a trip to Swindon Town on Tuesday night.
