The Uruguay international completed a big-money move from Benfica to Liverpool last year and had a mixed debut season in England.

The 24-year-old attacker has been inconsistent in the league this season as he has managed to score only four times in 16 appearances.

Nunez scored his last league goal in October against Bournemouth and Aldridge believes his goal drought has hampered his confidence massively.

The former Reds striker is worried about the Uruguayan’s current form and he stressed that he is rooting for Nunez to be an important player for the Reds in future.

Nunez struggled to make an impact in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United at the weekend and Aldridge admits he is expected to deliver big moments.

“Nunez’s liveliest moment of the match was when he got a booking from the referee, which is not great when you are the man leading the line and expected to deliver big moments”, Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column about Nunez.

“He has zero confidence at the moment and is in desperate need of a goal.

“I have previously said I don’t think the way we play is necessarily suited to his style, but I do hope he has a long-term future at the club.”

Nunez will be hoping to score his fifth league goal of the season this weekend when Liverpool face the league leaders, Arsenal on Saturday.
