Former Newcastle United star Didier Domi is of the view that the Magpies need to show a different kind of mentality if they want to compete with the best.
Eddie Howe’s side have failed to show consistency this season and went down to another defeat on Boxing Day, being beaten at home by Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle’s recent away form has been especially concerning, as the Magpies have failed to secure a victory in their last seven games away from St. James’ Park.
Domi believes that the reason behind Newcastle’s inconsistency and poor away-from-home results is because of their lack of a winning mentality.
He also pointed out that Newcastle’s lack of a winning mentality is because the club have not won silverware for so many seasons and stressed that if Howe’s side want to compete with the best, then they have to change their mentality.
When asked whether the reason behind Newcastle’s poor away form this season is the lack of a winning mentality, Domi said on beIN SPORTS: “It is just the mentality of the club at some point.
“It is always back of your head.
“When you have trophies in the club, you have more confidence; the mentality is there to approach the game.
“In Newcastle, it is a little bit different sometimes.
“They are always close, but they cannot win it.
“It is a little bit of a problem, but they are on a process just to grow, but if you compete with the best, I repeat, you have to have another mentality even though you have injuries [or are] away from home.”
Newcastle now have a huge January on the horizon with games against Liverpool, Sunderland, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
