Former Leeds United star Aidy White has indicated that he is far from convinced about Junior Firpo as a defender despite his attacking performance against Birmingham City.

Firpo put in a fine attacking performance after he came on to replace the injured Sam Byram at Elland Road on Monday.

He laid on two assists as Leeds hammered Birmingham 3-0 at home to get back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats.

White admitted that the left-back showed his ability going forward, which was never a doubt and he was very good in terms of providing an attacking threat on the left-hand side.

However, his defensive frailties were also on display and one of the rare opportunities Birmingham created came on Firpo’s side when he did not track back.

The former Leeds star said on BBC Radio Leeds: “Everybody seems to say that he is really good going forward and today he showed us that and put in a solid performance.

“But his defensive capabilities are a question, sometimes his work rate in getting back today.

“There was this one opportunity, barely an opportunity for Birmingham today where they went down on the right-hand side and Junior Firpo got easily drifted past.

“He didn’t really work hard or bust a gut to get back in.”

Firpo has struggled with injuries this season and has made just six appearances in the Championship.
