Oxford United are set to beat Charlton Athletic to the signature of Cheltenham Town striker Will Goodwin, with the U’s location aiding their push, according to the South London Press.

Both League One sides have been going head to head in an effort to snare promising striker Goodwin away from Cheltenham this month.

Cheltenham rejected initial bids from both sides, but they came back to the table and each club have offered £400,000 for Goodwin.

It is Oxford who are poised to beat Charlton to the striker though, despite the Addicks offering superior personal terms.

Location is suggested to be a factor in Goodwin choosing Oxford, while the U’s are also involved in the mix for promotion from League One.

Oxford will now move quickly to get the deal formally over the line and add Goodwin to the ranks.

He has scored six times in League One for Cheltenham this term and Oxford will be hopeful he can hit the ground running in a league with which he is familiar.

Charlton meanwhile will have to look elsewhere in their bid to add attacking options to Michael Appleton’s squad.
