Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed his delight at seeing Anthony Gordon being called up by England and insisted that he richly deserves the accolade.

Gordon has been named in the England squad that will take on Brazil and Belgium in international friendlies later this month.

The winger has represented England at youth level but now has a chance to earn his first cap for the senior squad in the next fortnight.

The winger has been brilliant for Newcastle in a difficult season for the club and Howe admitted that he is pleased to see Gordon get recognised with the national team call-up.

The Newcastle boss insisted that the winger has gone from stride to stride with each passing week this season and has done everything that has been asked of him in his role.

Reacting to Gordon’s England call-up, Howe said in a press conference: “Delighted for him.

“I know it’s been a big aim for him. He’s been outstanding this year and has grown week on week.

“Delighted that’s been recognised.

“He’s worked so far. He’s scored goals, created goals.

“He’s done brilliantly for the team. I’m delighted.”

Gordon has partially trained this week but is still a doubt to face to Manchester City in the FA Cup this weekend.
