Ipswich Town have kept talking with Blackburn Rovers over Sammie Szmodics and a deal is edging closer, according to the BBC.

Despite not being an out-and-out striker, the 28-year-old still finished as the Cjhampionship’s highest goalscorer with 27 goals last season.

Kieran McKenna, who saw Szmodics at close quarters last season, is keen on having him at his disposal for the Premier League challenge next season.

Ipswich have been persistent in the chase for the former Bristol City player despite seeing a number of their bids being rejected.

Their patience now seems to be paying off though with a deal now getting closer.

The clubs have continued discussions with each other and it now remains to be seen how quickly the Tractor Boys can wrap up the deal.

Szmodics’ form last season helped him earn his international debut for the Republic of Ireland in March this year.

He still has two years to run on his current contract with Blackburn Rovers.
