Ex-Portsmouth forward Josh Martin feels that if Pompey are able to avoid relegation from the Championship, it will represent a very successful season for them.

John Mousinho got Pompey promoted after winning League One last term and now they are looking to make sure they stay up in the Championship this season.

Mousinho’s side, though, have not made the best of starts to their life in the Championship as they are yet to register a single win after five matches in the league.

Martin, who left the club this summer, admitted that Mousinho could need a few years of experience managing in the Championship to have an impact.

The 23-year-old former Pompey man is clear that if Portsmouth manage to stay up by the end of this campaign, it will be a successful season for Mousinho.

“This season will be a good sign of whether he can continue or maybe needs another 2-3 years.

“This is his first season in the Championship, coming up against experience, quality and a lot of money”, Martin told The News about his former boss.

“If John can keep Pompey competitive and above the drop zone, I think it’s a job well done, a successful season, if the team stay up, 100 per cent that’s a successful season.”

Pompey are sitting second bottom in the league table and their journey does not get any easier as they will face Scott Parker’s Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.
