Manchester United spoke to one of the hottest prospects who joined Liverpool recently but the Red Devils felt they were already behind in the race, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils are trying to focus more on their youth academy and sign young players from elsewhere to develop them into top players.

This summer they signed the likes of Chido Obi-Martin and teenage Malian midfielder Sekou Kone to boost the youth academy.

Former Chelsea youth academy product Rio Ngumoha was a player they wanted but he joined Merseyside outfit Liverpool’s Under-18 side.

The 16-year-old listened to the plans of Manchester United back in June before he eventually ended up at Anfield.

However, amid talking to the teenage attacker, the Red Devils felt that they were lagging behind the Reds and pulled out from the race.

England Under-16s have capped Ngumoha and he has already played a couple of times for the Reds Under-18 side this term.

Liverpool will be looking to develop the highly-rated attacker carefully to get the best out of him in the future.
