Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens has praised Leeds United loanee Sonny Perkins for his display against Blackpool at the weekend.

The 20-year-old centre forward is highly rated at Leeds and the Whites sanctioned a season-long loan to Leyton Orient for Perkins in the summer.

Perkins started his first league game for Leyton Orient against Blackpool at the weekend in League One and scored in their 3-0 win.

Wellens pointed out that Perkins waited patiently for his opportunity and the Leyton Orient staff helped him build up his confidence progressively by managing his game time.

He stressed that Perkins was excellent against Blackpool positionally and defensively, while posing attacking threats and added that his goal is the product of the things he does to keep himself in the team.

“He has waited for his chance and needed to build his confidence up and we have tried to do that progressively and he should take a hell of a lot [from it]”, Wellens told Leyton Orient TV.

“I think just in general, his performance was really good today.

“The goal is a byproduct of all the things that he does, which are more importantly to stay in the team, get yourself in the team and keep yourself in the team.

“Positionally he was very good, defensively he was very good and then he was a threat and then obviously to get a goal and to be in the right area.”

Perkins has managed to score in back-to-back matches and the Leeds starlet will be hoping to continue his form until the end of the season.
