Anthony Elanga is due on Tyneside today to complete a move to Newcastle United, with his plane due to leave Faro in Portugal this afternoon, according to journalist Craig Hope.

Newcastle chased the Sweden winger last summer, but were unable to agree a fee with Nottingham Forest, who were reluctant sellers.

This summer though has been a different story and Newcastle have agreed a fee with Forest for Elanga.

That fee is suggested to be in the region of £55m and will hand Eddie Howe the winger he has been keen to have for over a year.

Matters are moving quickly and Elanga is due on Tyneside later today.

He has a ‘flight out of Faro’ this afternoon and Newcastle will look to start his medical and get it done within the next 24 hours.

Elanga knows Alexander Isak well from the Sweden national team and Howe will be looking to see their understanding translate to St James’ Park.

Anthony Elanga’s record vs Newcastle United

With Champions League football on the agenda, Newcastle know they need a deeper squad with more quality and feel Elanga will help with that.

The club are also expected to sign a new goalkeeper, a centre-back and potentially a striker, following the departure of Callum Wilson.

Newcastle will be clawing back some of the outlay on Elanga by selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds United for £12m.

Longstaff has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Newcastle and was given little playing time by Howe during the second half of last season.

The Magpies look to feel that cashing in on him is the smart move and Leeds have been keen to get the deal done.

It will though leave Newcastle with one fewer body in the midfield department and all eyes will be on whether they react by trying to sign another midfielder before the window closes.
