Olympiacos have sacked German boss Ewald Lienen after he failed to guide the club through their Europa League qualifier with Maccabi Tel-Aviv. The Athens club’s board simply could not stand the prospect of no European football whatsoever this season – for the first time since 1991/92 – and fired Lienen.

The move seems tough on the German boss who was only appointed two months ago, but Olympiacos is a club still in a state of panic following rivals Panathinaikos claiming the Super League title last season and fast emerging as the new top dog in Greek football.

The Greek giants will now begin their search for a new coach who will have relatively little time to get to know his squad before the new league season begins.
