Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has admitted that the German giants face a fight to keep hold of star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, and he knows Real Madrid especially would welcome him with open arms.

The 26-year-old has stated that it should not be assumed he is married to Bayern for life and so far the Bundesliga club have failed to persuade him to extend a contract that runs out in 2012.

Van Gaal has now confirmed that he is aware Schweinsteiger has fans across Europe and it is going to be hard to ensure he remains at Bayern Munich.

"I am concerned that big clubs will mobilise and make substantial offers [for Schweinsteiger]", said the Dutchman.

"We are aware that the interest towards [Schweinsteiger] is strengthened. At Real Madrid for example, there is no one like him. The decision is his. I’d like him to stay and I also believe that is the best thing [for him]."
