Zenit St. Petersburg are ready to rival Manchester City for Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Renato Augusto. The Brazilian has caught the eye of coach Luciano Spalletti, who believes he would help to boost the club’s Champions League campaign next season.

Augusto joined Leverkusen in 2008 from Flamengo and at the time was believed to be one of the best youngsters the famous Brazilian side has ever produced. The 22-year-old settled quickly in Germany, and has so far clocked up over 50 Bundesliga starts at the BayArena.

Under contract with Leverkusen until 2014, Augusto will not come cheap for whichever club succeeds in tempting him away from Germany. Zenit, firmly on course to win the Russian Premier League this season, will try to move quickly, well aware that City are able to outbid any club on the planet.
