Barcelona have emerged as possible contenders for Newcastle United left back Jose Enrique. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Premier League side at the end of the season and has yet to sign an improved contract at St. James’ Park, with his current deal expiring in 2012.
The Spaniard has already attracted interest from Liverpool, while Manchester United too are believed to be monitoring developments. The arrival of Barcelona on the scene though could well complicate matters, with Enrique surely unable to turn down a switch to the Camp Nou.
The Catalans are assessing their left back options for next season and are looking for someone to provide more competition for Maxwell. Enrique, who has experience of La Liga, most notably through a spell with Villarreal before making the move to Newcastle in 2007, has come to their attention as a quality option.
Enrique would likely cost any interested party upwards of £6M.
