Reports from France suggest Newcastle United will step up their attempt to sign highly-rated Saint-Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
The 24-year-old, a product of the prestigious Clairefontaine academy, has attracted attention from a number of clubs and is believed to have an exit clause in his contract which, were Newcastle to meet, would allow the English side to speak to the Frenchman.
According to RMC, Alan Pardew’s side are set to increase their efforts to buy Matuidi after sending scouts to watch the player extensively over the last few weeks.
Saint-Etienne have produced an underwhelming campaign in Ligue 1 and sit mid-table, but for Matuidi the season has been judged as one of progress. Last year the midfielder picked up his first France cap and in March of this year made his first starting appearance for the national team.
A tough-tackling midfielder also famed for his playmaking ability, the signing of Matuidi would represent something of a coup for Newcastle and Pardew’s side will surely face significant opposition for the Saint-Etienne man’s signature.
