Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Roma to sign Brazilian goalkeeper Doni according to reports from Italy.

The Anfield club have been looking for an experienced understudy to Pepe Reina, but recently missed out on 40-year-old former Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel, being pipped to his signature by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, Italian source Sky Sport 24, report that the Reds have come to an agreement with Roma over Doni.

The 31-year-old Brazilian shot-stopper must now decide whether he wishes to move to Anfield, or remain with the Giallorossi to fight for his place.

Until the 2009/10 campaign, Doni was Roma’s first choice goalkeeper, but since losing his place has slipped down the pecking order, moving behind countryman Julio Sergio, while veteran Romanian keeper Bogdan Lobont is also at the club.

With Doni young, in goalkeeping terms, and holding ten senior Brazil caps to his name, his willingness to sit on the bench on Merseyside is open to question. Liverpool though will hope to have finally ended their search for a new experienced shot-stopper.
