Roma’s Brazilian goalkeeper Doni has rejected a move to English Premier League side Liverpool.

A deal between the Giallorossi and the Reds had been agreed in principle and it was thought the 31-year-old shot-stopper would head to Anfield as Jose Reina’s understudy. However, talks between Liverpool and Doni have broken down, with the Brazilian refusing to move.

Sources in Italy suggest that Liverpool offered Doni a contract worth €900,000 per season, however the goalkeeper earns €2.5M in the Italian capital, making refusing the move an easy decision.

Doni remains willing to exit the Stadio Olimpico, but he will understandably not take such a drastic reduction in pay to warm the Anfield bench.

For their part, Liverpool’s search for an experienced understudy to Spain international Reina continues although given the former Villarreal man’s entrenched position between the sticks, any keeper joining will clearly play only a limited amount of first team football.
