Brazilian goalkeeper Doni is all set to end his stint at Roma and sign for Premier League side Liverpool.
The 31-year-old was first targeted by Kenny Dalglish to provide cover for Pepe Reina at the beginning of June, but discussions soon hit a brick wall when the Reds placed an offer on the table well below Doni’s current Roma earnings.
However, there has been movement between the two parties and, as reported by Italian source Sky Sport 24, Doni is set to travel to England on Thursday to undergo a medical on Merseyside.
The exact complexion of the deal remains unclear, but Liverpool must have narrowed the gap between the €2.5M per year Doni was earning with the Giallorossi and the Reds’ initial €900,000 a season offer.
Roma may well have contributed to smoothing the deal by offering the 31-year-old a payoff of sorts. The Serie A club are pushing ahead with their swoop for Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and moving Doni off the wage bill will help matters.
The shot-stopper will provide competition for Spanish international Reina, although his task in dislodging one of the Premier League’s top number 1s looks a difficult one.
