Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up their pursuit of Real Madrid outcast Lassana Diarra according to reports coming from Spain.

The tough-tackling French midfielder was left out of Real Madrid’s North American tour and is available for transfer at the Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho has already added to his midfield by buying Nuri Sahin from Borussia Dortmund at the start of the summer, while there are also suggestions the former Chelsea boss may deploy Fabio Coentrao, bought from Benfica, as a midfielder at times next season.

And all of this adds up to little first team opportunities for Diarra.

According to Spanish daily AS, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has noted the midfielder’s situation and is pushing to offer the 26-year-old an escape route from Los Blancos.

Real Madrid are looking for a fee in the region of €20M for Diarra, money they would instantly put to use in their quest to bring another striker to the club.

Redknapp, who is keen to send out a signal of Spurs’ intent to break back into the top four and end constant chatter over the possible departure of Luka Modric, believes Diarra would be an ideal addition.

Spurs may look to play hardball with Real Madrid however, knowing clearly that the Frenchman is not in Mourinho’s plans for the new season.
