Chelsea could return to Tottenham Hotspur with a fresh offer for Luka Modric this week according to the club’s chief executive Ron Gourlay.

Missing out on Argentine midfielder Javier Pastore, who is destined to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, has sent the Blues back to the drawing board in their bid for a creative spark.

And this may cause Chelsea to once again move for Modric, despite having had a £22M offer rejected by Spurs earlier this summer and having been told by the White Hart Lane outfit that the player is not for sale.

"I don’t like talking about players from other clubs", said Gourlay speaking to Sky Sports News, "but that’s something we’ll look at in the week and take it from there."

"We really need to sit down with Andre [Villas-Boas] and talk this through. Even though we’ve been travelling away, you can still be active in the marketplace nowadays."

Gourlay had announced that he expected two new signings to be presented at Stamford Bridge imminently when speaking on the club’s Asian tour on 23rd July, but this has yet to materialise.

Spurs will fight hard to keep hold of Modric, but the player himself is known to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. Having had a taste of the Champions League last season, the Croatian schemer is not ready to easily settle for Europa League football.
