The transfer of Spanish winger Juan Mata from Valencia to Chelsea is imminent according to reports from Spain.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas has moved quickly to make Los Che an offer they cannot refuse and sources have confirmed that Chelsea will pay between €27M and €28M for Mata.

Valencia had been holding out for €30M, but Chelsea’s payment terms, with the club’s owner Roman Abramovich having given the green light to pay most of the fee up front, has swung the deal.

Mata is expected to sign a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with personal terms and the passing of a medical certain to present little problem.

Blues boss Villas-Boas watched as interest as Mata starred in Spain’s successful European Under-21 Championship team in Denmark and kept a close eye on the 23-year-old’s situation upon his return to the Mestalla.

Premier League rivals Arsenal moved for Mata earlier in the summer, but were unable to agree a deal before the player’s special buy-out clause expired at the end of July.
