Marseille expect Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to return for midfielder Lucho Gonzalez within the next few days.
Wenger had a loan bid for the 30-year-old dismissed by Marseille boss Didier Deschamps recently, but the French side believe Arsenal will come back to them, this time with a cash offer.
This is despite Marseille Sporting Director Jose Anigo ruling out the possibility of selling the Argentine to the Gunners due to the sides being drawn together in the Champions League.
Wenger is thought keen on the experience he feels Gonzalez could bring to a young Gunners midfield and is also attracted by the affordability of the former FC Porto man in comparison to other targets.
The Emirates outfit had been hoping to tie up a loan swoop for Real Madrid star Kaka, but this deal looks very unlikely to come to fruition.
And Gonzlaez is the next name on Arsenal’s shortlist.
The Argentine has also been linked with Serie A side Roma this summer and the Giallorossi were at one point very hopeful of concluding an agreement.
Gonzalez has remained at the Stade Velodrome however.
