Moneybags Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala have been linked with audacious bids for Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard and Chelsea schemer Frank Lampard.

Having splashed out millions throughout the summer, bringing in the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Yuri Zhirkov and Mbark Boussoufa, money is no object for Anzhi as they seek to build a side capable of competing for the Champions League.

Barcelona full back Dani Alves was sounded out just a month ago, but gave the Russians a polite ‘no thank you’ after a lucrative offer was slid across the table in his direction.

The talk now is that Anzhi will sound out Gerrard and Lampard, though their prospects for signing either look slim.

The Russian Premier League club would offer each a contract worth some €15M per year.

Given that the England internationals are both over 30, Anzhi hope they will take the chance of a final big payday seriously and ponder a move to Russia.

Eto’o is Anzhi’s perfect ambassador for further superstar signings and the Cameroon goal-getter has settled into life at the Dagestan side perfectly, scoring along with Roberto Carlos in the side’s recent 2-1 win over Volga Novogorod.
