Bundesliga side Hamburg are drawing up a list of January reinforcements to aid their climb up the table – and Stoke City defender Robert Huth’s name features prominently.

The northern German side have endured a truly miserable start to the new season and recently sacked coach Michael Oenning.

Rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga, Hamburg look on the brink of appointing Huub Stevens as Oenning’s successor, but former Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen, who holds the same post at Hamburg, is already plotting transfer targets.

And shoring up the club’s backline is a priority, with a defence that has conceded 18 goals in seven Bundesliga games looking set to continue to struggle if matters do not improve.

Huth, who Arnesen knows well from his time in England, would be a welcome addition and, as a German international, would have a relatively short adaptation period.

The Stoke City defender has never played his football in the Bundesliga, appearing at senior level only for Chelsea, Middlesbrough and the Britannia Stadium outfit.

An opportunity to move to a club of Hamburg’s stature could be too good to turn down for the 27-year-old, though Stoke boss Tony Pulis would surely be reluctant to part with Huth.
