Chelsea have been mooted as a possible destination for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira in January.
The future of the Germany international at the Bernabeu is uncertain and Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho fingered Khedira for the club’s defeat 1-0 defeat to Levante recently, accusing the midfielder of being easily tricked into getting himself sent off.
And with Mourinho enjoying a wealth of midfield options at Real Madrid, and the returning Kaka beginning to rediscover glimpses of his best, Khedira could well be available at the right price in the winter window as he slips down the pecking order.
The former Stuttgart man’s potential availability has not been lost on Chelsea, with sources indicating that Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas is pondering whether to turn to the German, especially as question marks still hang over Michael Essien’s return date – the Ghana star may miss the entire season through injury.
Khedira would add bite and passing quality in Chelsea’s engine room and his acquisition would be entirely consistent with the type of fluid football Villas-Boas is attempting to coax out of his side.
If Chelsea choose to move however, they look certain to face opposition, with Bayern Munich eyeing a bid to take Khedira back to the Bundesliga, while AC Milan remain a potential destination.
Khedira cost Real Madrid the bargain price of just €14M to snap up from Stuttgart last summer, the club he helped to the Bundesliga title in 2006/07.
