Newcastle United face a January transfer window fight for the services of Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud with domestic rivals Arsenal having begun to track the 25-year-old.
Giroud has been in prolific form in front of goal so far this season and scouts from Newcastle have been in regular attendance at the Stade de la Mosson, while the sight of Magpies talent spotters at Montpellier’s away games is also not an unusual one.
Indeed, Newcastle scouts were in attendance at the weekend as Montpellier saw off Sochaux 3-1 in Ligue 1, with Giroud impressing with a superb hat-trick.
But Alan Pardew will have far from a free run at the 25-year-old goal-getter as his reputation grows.
Giroud’s exploits have piqued Arsenal’s interest and the Gunners could rival Newcastle for the Frenchman’s signature, with Arsene Wenger keen to bolster his forward options in January.
And Giroud would undoubtedly be attracted by the prospect of working with countryman Wenger at one of England’s biggest clubs.
There is interest in the striker from elsewhere too, with La Liga giants Valencia and Bundesliga outfit Schalke also having noted Giroud’s exploits.
