Borussia Dortmund starlet Mario Gotze has been voted the European Golden Boy by Italian newspaper Tuttosport.

The Italian daily hands out the Golden Boy award every season to the finest player of the year under the age of 21. It has long been seen as a mark that great things are to be expected and in the midfielder’s case that is far from a surprise.

A panel of 30 journalists had little problem deciding that Gotze should bag the accolade, in recognition of his continued development.

The 19-year-old is the hottest talent in European football at present, with the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid, Inter and Bayern Munich all having been linked with a bid.

Dortmund remain keen to do all they can to keep Gotze however and it looks highly unlikely that the Germany international will be sold in the January window or even next summer.

Gotze succeeds Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli as the holder of the Golden Boy, an award which have proven accurate at predicting future stars.

Wayne Rooney, Rafael van der Vaart, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero are just some of the players to have scooped the accolade.
