Manchester United have sounded out Benfica over a possible bid for Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, the player’s agent has confirmed.
Sir Alex Ferguson is known to have been impressed with the 23-year-old’s performances against United in the Champions League in a group the Portuguese giants qualified from, while the English champions did not.
Speculation has swirled that Ferguson is ready to splash the cash on Gaitan, with some talk even going so far as to suggest a deal has already been agreed.
For Jose Irribaran, Gaitan’s agent, that chatter is premature – but Irribaran has confirmed that talks have taken place between Benfica and United.
"I have not received any contact from United", Irribaran told Antena, "but there have been conversations between the two clubs."
And Gaitan’s representative confirmed that the Argentine would be willing to speak to United, although stressed his client remains happy at the Estadio da Luz.
"If these talks progress, then we will get our time to speak.
"But Nico is very happy at Benfica and is looking forward to enjoying a successful season."
It is believed Gaitan would cost United €30M if the deal unfolds.
