Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has confirmed the club are tracking Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen and insisted recruiting the Denmark international would be in line with the team’s transfer policy.

The English champions have been linked with stepping up their interest in Eriksen as they finally abandon hope of signing Wesley Sneijder from Inter and skip to the next generation of world class creative midfielders.

And the technically excellent Dane fits the bill, with his talent having shone at the Amsterdam ArenA over two and a half seasons of first team football, confirming early reports of his potential.

Eriksen’s progress has not gone unnoticed by Manchester United and the Red Devils will have a chance to study the former OB youth teamer at close quarters when Sir Alex Ferguson’s men take on Ajax in the Europa League Round of 32 in the new year.

It is an opportunity that will not be missed, with Meulensteen explaining that the Old Trafford outfit are following Eriksen closely.

"Yes, he’s a player that’s on our radar – and that’s how it should be", said Ferguson’s lieutenant to Voetbal International, in a nod to the player’s talent.

"It’s true that a player like Eriksen would fit into our transfer policy.

"But we have not been discussing his name lately."

Eriksen is under contract at the Amsterdam ArenA until 2014 and Ajax will not easily part with the midfielder.

For Manchester United however, a substantial bid for the 19-year-old would make more long term sense than an equally large offer for Sneijder, and a swoop could unfold next summer.
