Luciano Spalletti has signed a new contract with Zenit St. Petersburg.
The Russian champions were keen to keep the Italian at the club after a spell which has been hugely successful on both the domestic and European front – Spalletti has led Zenit to the last 16 of this season’s Champions League.
There had been mounting speculation that the coach could return to his native Italy, with no shortage of sides eyeing his services.
He has though been persuaded the stay.
Spalletti has inked an extended contract which will keep him at Zenit until 2015.
The Italian also sees his responsibilities within the club increase, in line with his wishes, and he will now have a direct say in Zenit’s transfer policy.
Spalletti joined Zenit in late 2009 and has won the Russian Premier League, Russian Cup and Russian Super Cup at the club.
