Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is to undergo a liver transplant which puts his participation at Euro 2012 for France in serious doubt.
The 32-year-old, who has been a rock in the Blaugrana’s defence this season, had surgery to remove a tumour on his liver last March.
Abidal recovered in record time however and made an emotional comeback in Barcelona’s Champions League final victory over Manchester United.
"The transplant has been an option since the start of his treatment a year ago", said a Barcelona spokesman.
Abidal had recently been linked with a switch away from the Camp Nou, but the Frenchman penned a one-year extension earlier this season.
He will now concentrate on trying to return to represent Laurent Blanc’s Les Bleus at Euro 2012.
