Borussia Dortmund have scored a coup by persuading Mario Gotze to ink an extended contract at the club.

The sublimely gifted attacking midfielder has been on the wanted list of almost all Europe’s elite over the last 12 months, with English Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester United particularly said to be making the running.

Gotze has always insisted that he is happy at Dortmund however, and the Bundesliga champions have remained confident of keeping hold of the 19-year-old.

Now that confidence has been shown not to have been misplaced as the Germany international has agreed to extend his contract until 30th June, 2016.

Dortmund will hope that Gotze’s signal of intent helps to put off interested clubs from bidding for his services in the summer, where a stellar display at Euro 2012 could only increase his attractiveness.

"Everyone knows how comfortable I feel at Dortmund", Gotze told the club’s official site upon putting pen to paper.

And Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc welcomed the deal, saying: "We are very happy that we are taking another common step forward into the future with Mario."

Jurgen Klopp’s men currently top the Bundesliga and are looking good to defend the title won last season.
