Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are keen to sign Japanese schemer Shinji Kagawa to a new contract.

Kagawa is a key performer for Jurgen Klopp’s German champions and the 23-year-old will only have one year remaining on his current deal in the summer.

Now Dortmund want to extend that and reward the midfielder for his excellent progress since landing at the club in 2010.

"He is one of our key players and we want to keep him", admitted Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc when asked about a new contract for Kagawa.

The Japan international has made 25 appearances in the Bundesliga in the current campaign, finding the back of the net 12 times and providing a remarkable nine assists.

If Kagawa did put pen to paper he would be following Mario Gotze’s lead after the midfielder recently committed to the Ruhr giants until 2016.
