Chelsea could be poised to step up their interest in Napoli striker Edinson Cavani after the English giants sent a scout to watch the Uruguayan in action against Novara in Serie A yesterday.
Sources in Italy confirmed that a representative from Chelsea took in Cavani’s performance from the stands as Walter Mazzarri’s side picked up a precious three points.
Cavani scored the first goal of the game in what proved to be a 2-0 win for the hosts at the San Paolo.
Signing the Uruguay star would be an expensive operation for Chelsea, but the English side look set to make serious investments in their playing staff after falling short of expectations this season.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has stood firm to his stance that, from a financial point of view he is under no pressure to sell, although the Italian also insisted that a "crazy" offer for Cavani could be successful.
And Napoli may miss out on next season’s Champions League, with the Azzurri three points behind the all-important third spot occupied by Lazio, a factor which could increase the chances of a departure for Cavani.
The 25-year-old has scored 19 goals so far in this season’s Serie A.
