Barcelona have joined the hunt for Toulouse defender Aymen Abdennour, according to France Football.

The Tunisian has been heavily linked with English Premier League outfit Arsenal, and the Gunners’ did scout the 22-year-old towards the end of last year.

Toulouse were quickly alerted to the heads that Abdennour was turning and offered the defender a new contract at the Stade Municipal, which he duly signed.

Now the defender is under contract with the Ligue 1 side until 2016, a fact which substantially strengthens their negotiating position.

Barcelona are looking to beef up their defensive options in the summer and Abdennour could prove to be a player whose acquisition would not break the bank for the Catalans.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger meanwhile is thought to view the Tunisian as a capable performer and seriously considered a swoop for his services in January, when the Gunners suffered a defensive injury crisis – the Frenchman could yet rekindle his interest.

Abdennour would undoubtedly be flattered by interest from two of Europe’s very biggest clubs and Toulouse may struggle to keep hold of the 22-year-old.

He is rated at around the €5M mark.
