Alberto Aquilani’s future looks increasingly unclear after sources in Italy suggested the Rossoneri want Liverpool to cancel the player’s contract.

The Serie A giants would then swoop in to seal the deal with the former Roma man, who failed to play enough games in his loan spell to trigger an automatic purchase clause which had been agreed with the Reds last summer.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed yesterday that the Rossoneri are not pushing ahead to sign the midfielder as things stand, although they will hold talks with Liverpool in June, after the loan agreement has expired.

And it is now thought that Milan would like Liverpool to offload Aquilani for free, despite the Italian still having two years left to run on his contract.

For Milan, who are baulking at paying the former Roma man a comparable wage to that which he collects at Anfield, a free transfer is perhaps the only way to push the deal forward.

Even then Aquilani would be offered a contract on less than he would earn back on Merseyside.

As was the case last summer, it appears Aquilani’s agent Franco Zavaglia has much trekking between England and Italy to do.
