Roberto Mancini has insisted that choosing between Napoli’s Edinson Cavani and Arsenal’s Robin van Persie would be an impossible task, had one not already been ruled out due to price constraints.
The Manchester City manager has been linked with moves for both players and the Citizens boss is thought to want to add a world class striker to his squad over the summer, with an improved showing in next season’s Champions League a key target at Eastlands.
Cavani is a player Mancini has admired for some time, while Van Persie showed his qualities in last year’s Premier League, almost single-handedly hauling the Gunners into a top four spot.
But, Mancini has insisted, the money Napoli want for Cavani has ruled him out as a transfer target; the Italian did not say the same of Van Persie, who has but one year left to run on his Arsenal contract.
"Who would I choose between Van Persie and Cavani? The Dutchman is very strong, while the Uruguayan has everything I love in an attacker", Mancini told Tuttosport.
"I wanted to sign him [Cavani] when I was at Inter and he played for Palermo. But now, at the current price, it is impossible."
The stage looks set for Mancini to make an attempt to sign Van Persie as an alternative to Cavani and, should the Italian boss succeed, the Dutchman will surely more than make up for the Citizens’ failure to bag the Uruguayan.
Cavani managed 23 goals in 35 Serie A games last season, while Van Persie bagged 30 in 38 Premier League encounters.
