Newcastle United have increased their bid for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong.

The Magpies bid €10M for the highly-rated 21-year-old earlier in the week, but saw Steve McClaren’s Tukkers knock that offer back – Twente have slapped a minimum asking price of €15M on De Jong’s head.

It has not taken long though for the English Premier League outfit to return with a revised bid and now, according to Dutch daily AD, Newcastle have indeed come back to the table.

The Magpies have increased their bid to €12M and will now wait for Twente’s response.

De Jong is well regarded at the Tukkers, who would love to keep hold of the goal-getter for at least another season – one of the reasons that Twente placed a €15M asking price on the Holland international’s head was to put off potential suitors.

Indeed, the club’s chairman, Joop Munsterman has insisted the starlet should stay. "It is clear that we prefer to keep De Jong", he said.

There is also interest in De Jong from Portuguese giants Benfica, who recently snapped up another player from Twente, winger Ola John.
