Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy insists he is still crossing his fingers for a move to Newcastle United, despite his club’s president Michel Seydoux declaring the summer transfer saga at an end.
Newcastle have had two bids for the France international, of €5M and €6M, rejected by Lille, who not only feel both offers undervalued the 27-year-old, but also stressed there is now little time for them to buy an adequate replacement.
Seydoux has thus told Debuchy to focus on Lille as he will be remaining with Rudi Garcia’s men for the 2012/13 campaign.
This has not found favour with the right-back, who appears to still have his heart set on moving to the Magpies; Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will have to increase his offer to at least €8M to stand any chance of success, according to sources in France.
"I do not really want to talk about my future", said Debuchy to Canal+.
"I know what the president said", he added.
"In France, the transfer period is open until 4th September.
"I still want to leave, but we will see what happens."
Lille opened their Ligue 1 campaign last night by securing a 2-1 victory at Saint-Etienne. In the Champions League they have been drawn to face Danish side FC Copenhagen in the playoff round.
