German side Hamburg are interested in signing Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart, who has previously turned out for the club, enjoying a three-year spell with the Bundesliga outfit.

The German giants have been linked with the Dutchman for the entire summer and the club have also approached Tottenham in order to negotiate a transfer for the attacking midfielder, with the clock ticking down to the end of the window.

Hamburg’s president, Carl-Edgar Jarchow, has now reiterated his team’s desire to sign the former Real Madrid schemer, but admitted that time is running out to strike a deal with Spurs.

"There is not a lot of time – it is really up to Tottenham Hotspur”, the Hamburg supremo told DPA.

"If we have a chance of signing him, we’ll do everything we can to make that happen.”

The latest developments in the transfer market suggest that the planets may be aligning to smile on Van der Vaart rejoining his former club.

Die Rothosen have parted with Czech international midfielder David Jarolim, with the player joining French side Evian, in an apparent effort to make way for the 29-year-old, while Tottenham have signed Belgium international Moussa Dembele from Fulham, who could go some way towards replacing the Dutchman.

It remains to be seen whether the clubs have already agreed a deal, but Hamburg are desperate to sign Van der Vaart to provide their fans with hope that an alarming slide, which gathered pace last season, can be stopped.

Van der Vaart joined Spurs in 2010 from Real Madrid, landing at White Hart Lane on the very last day of the summer transfer window, in what was, at the time, a genuine coup for the London club.
