Liverpool look unlikely to sign Clint Dempsey before the transfer window closes tonight after Fulham rejected the Reds bid for the American.
It had appeared that Dempsey was almost certain to end up at Anfield after the 29-year-old turned down the chance to join Aston Villa earlier today.
Villa boss Paul Lambert had a bid accepted by Fulham, but Dempsey was cool on landing at Villa Park, with his heart set on signing for Liverpool.
But when Liverpool’s bid arrived for the forward this evening, it was quickly rebuffed by Martin Jol’s Cottagers as insufficient.
Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre and the Merseyside outfit’s boss Brendan Rodgers have now left the club’s Melwood training ground and the chances of Dempsey ending up a Reds player before the window closes are extremely slim.
It appears that either a change of heart on the part of Fulham, or an improved bid on the part of Liverpool, is needed to help Dempsey realise his dream move.
Should Dempsey remain at Craven Cottage, he may have bridges to build after being left out of the club’s first two Premier League games.
