Owen Coyle has been sacked as the manager of Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

The Trotters find themselves 18th in England’s second tier, having won only three of their ten games so far. Bolton went down to defeat against Millwall at the weekend and the club’s board could see no way back with Coyle in charge.

Coyle took over at Bolton in January 2010, but saw the side’s form spiral at the start of last season.

A difficult run of games saw the Trotters plunged into a losing habit which they could not shake.

Relegation followed, though Coyle was expected to lead a strong Bolton push for promotion this season.

Bolton will now start the search for his successor.

Front-runners for the post include former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, ex-Birmingham boss Alex McLeish and former Derby County manager Billy Davies.
