The agent of Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has raised the prospect of his client leaving Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Macheda is currently well down the pecking order at the Red Devils and the arrival of Robin van Persie, combined with the capture of young Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez, has pushed the Italian firmly out of the first team picture.

relatedNewsStoryMacheda has enjoyed two loan spells away from Manchester United, at Sampdoria and QPR respectively, in a bid for first team football to speed up his development, and the 21-year-old could be in line for another, or even a permanent exit.

And Macheda’s representative Giovanni Bia is due to discuss his client’s situation with Sir Alex Ferguson later this week.

"Manchester United have some phenomenal attackers", Bia told Itasportpress.

"For Federico, it is very difficult to break through there.

"He wants to play more and if that cannot happen at United, then we must find a solution.

"It might be better that he leaves in January."

Bia, a former tough-tackling defender in Serie A in the 1990s, will now talk with Ferguson, who wanted to keep Macheda during the summer transfer window despite serious interest.

"In the summer, teams from Germany and Spain were asking about him, but Manchester [United] wanted to keep him.

"I’m with Sir Alex Ferguson this week to talk about his situation.

"I hope he understands the situation because it makes no sense to keep a 21-year-old striker on the bench."

Macheda has only played in the Premier League’s Under-21 competition so far this season, playing three games and scoring four goals.

He joined Manchester United in 2007 from Italian giants Lazio and made his senior debut in 2009, memorably scoring against Aston Villa in a game which proved to be crucial in the Red Devils’ march to the Premier League title.
