Schalke are stepping their negotiations on new contracts for both Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lewis Holtby.

Both Huntelaar and Holtby have contracts which are due to expire next summer and each has attracted a substantial amount of interest.

English Premier League giants Liverpool are thought to be leading the race for Huntelaar, with the Merseyside giants having been strongly linked with a bid.

However, Italian champions Juventus are also interested, while Lazio too have been linked with a swoop.

22-year-old midfielder Holtby meanwhile is another name on Liverpool’s list, although the Reds have been joined as admirers by fellow English giants Arsenal.

Holtby’s agent has admitted his client has offers on the table from clubs in England and Spain, meaning the ball is in the Germany international’s court to make a decision.

Schalke are desperate to extend the contracts of both players though and, well aware that January, when each could sign a pre-contractual agreement, is fast approaching, are stepping up talks.

relatedNewsStory"We are carrying out intensive talks with Lewis Holtby and Huntelaar", Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

"We want to extend both contracts."

It remains to be seen whether either Holtby, Huntelaar, or both, choose to continue their adventure with the Ruhr giants.

But Schalke want clarification over their respective futures quickly.
