Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea could be set to have the opportunity to return to Spanish football in the near future with Real Madrid, according to daily El Confidencial.

De Gea was snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, but has not enjoyed the happiest of times in English football, with a long adaptation period needed at Old Trafford.

The shot-stopper’s agent Jorge Mendes enjoys a good relationship with Real Madrid and it has been suggested De Gea has been informed Los Blancos could provide him with a route back to his homeland.

At the Bernabeu, manager Jose Mourinho has sidelined Iker Casillas, choosing to play Antonio Adan ahead of the Spain number 1 at the weekend, and the Portuguese wants genuine competition for the club skipper.

However, Real Madrid are also keen on Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who may prove a cheaper option than De Gea.

It also remains to be seen how Manchester United would react towards a bid from Real Madrid for De Gea, with Ferguson having placed a large amount of faith in the Spanish shot-stopper.

De Gea is also on a long-term deal at Old Trafford, which runs until 2016.
