Moussa Dembele believes that his team mate at Tottenham Hotspur, Jan Vertonghen, should be the captain of the North London club.

Dembele and his fellow Belgian Vertonghen were snapped up by Spurs during the summer transfer window, with Dembele making the switch from Fulham, while Vertonghen took his first leap into English football from Dutch champions Ajax.

At Ajax, Vertonghen was captain and led Frank de Boer’s men to last season’s Eredivisie title.

But at White Hart Lane, veteran French stopper William Gallas wears the armband, while Michael Dawson is vice-captain.

For Demebele though, Vertonghen should be wearing the armband and is already acting like a captain, even if he is not yet quite as vocal in the dressing room as he was at Ajax.

"His performances earn much respect for him", the midfielder told Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad.

"But it is normal that in January, in the dressing room, he is not as vocal as in Amsterdam.

"As we walk down the street, our fans come over and say he should be the captain – and that’s not a joke."

Vertonghen however is relaxed over Dembele’s words and understands he has much work to do to attain the status he enjoyed at Ajax.

"I’ve just got here and don’t have that status yet. In the hierarchy, I have again started at the bottom and as the years go by I could again become important."
